How much Pilates is enough?

enough PIlatesI often get asked “how much Pilates is enough?” and my response is always. ‘it depends…what do you want to get out of it?’. However I’ve become aware that there seems to be a trend for doing Pilates just once a week, and, as many of my clients have heard me say, this just isn’t enough. Yes, doing Pilates once a week is better than nothing, and for many who are simply looking for that hour to themselves, to focus on their bodies, to breathe, relax, move mindfully, (which of course in itself can be incredibly beneficial), or for those doing other forms of exercise during the week, once may well be enough. But if that one class is your only real exercise, or if you are doing Pilates to recover from injury and back problems or improve sporting performance, then once a week is just the bare minimum. Imagine signing up to the gym and only going once a week…  In fact I’ve often heard it said, “doing Pilates once a week is just enough to stop us sliding backwards”.

So, what is the magic number and how much is enough?  Well, I’m not a big believer in once-size-fits-all advice, and I encourage you to explore what works for you with your needs, goals and lifestyle, however, from my experience and the research, it seems that three tends to be the magic number. This is when we really see great returns.

Now I can hear some of you saying “but I can’t afford to go to Pilates three times a week, both in time and money!” While this may well be true, it also may just be an idea that is worth challenging, after all exercise is an investment in our bodies, our well-being, our future, and what is more important than that?

And perhaps there are other ways of doing it too. Those who know me well know that I’m all about building exercise and mindfulness into our daily lives, and there are many ways we can do this that don’t cost a penny – let’s make it easy for ourselves! So below, in the next post, you will find my top tips for doing this.
